Starting off…
I would have to say that the first important subject for homeschooling would have to be READING.
I can’t stress it enough. Wherever your child will go they will see letters and words.
When my oldest was born 22 years ago, I was given the advice to read to her often.
Guess what?
I didn’t take that advice. I thought “my baby isn’t going to understand anything”. Now my oldest grew up to be an avid reader but it definitely was not because I read to her because I barely did. She did see me reading quite often so maybe it somehow rubbed off on her.
It took me years and with the addition of more children for me to realize how important reading is at a very young age. My toddler will not sit still for me to read but if I tell him what is going on in the picture book or point things out then he will sit and pay attention.
You don’t always have to read the words. Just look at the book and tell the story in your own words.
Please, please, please read to your children often. Read a loud as often as you can because that is time well spent with your children. They will remember that time and will more than likely remember the story.
My children sure do.
As your children grow and start homeschool, reading should be the number one priority because then they will be able to read all kinds of books as they get older. Any subject that they will be doing will require them to read.
In addition, make sure your children don’t just read but also comprehend what they are reading. They should understand and be able to tell you what either you read to them or what they read on their own.
