Homeschool Planning For The New School Year

Planning for the new homeschool year is here.

Am I ready for it?

No.

My homeschool year has just come to an end and I am ready for a break. But my break will be short lived because in the back of my mind I am thinking about the new homeschool year.

The summer will fly by and school will start again.

Every year I struggle with trying to figure out what I want to do for the next school year.

However, there are some basics that I stick to.

First off is deciding when I want to start the new homeschool year.

We take a full break from homeschool for the summer except for reading. That is one way my kids can earn some money. I give them a reading challenge. They are always up for it and end up completing it.

I usually follow a similar school calendar that the public school follows.

Now on to the curriculum.

This is the hard part for me.

I have had very few years since I began homeschooling back in 2018 that each year was similar to the previous one.

What I mean by that is that every couple of years things would change. At one point we moved two years in a row.

Now that was hard.

Then I had younger kids starting school. I had kids that wanted to try public school only to find out that they didn’t like it.

I have had kids graduate, been pregnant and had a baby, and planned a wedding for my daughter.

It really throws your homeschooling in for a loop. Most of your plans for the homeschooling year go out the window.

I do though make sure to at least stick to the basics.

I believe that if your child has a solid foundation in reading, writing, and math…then they will be just fine. Those are the basics of everything else that they will learn later on.

We stress ourselves out trying to find the perfect curriculum but keeping it simple and sticking to the basics is usually the best thing we can do for our kids, our homeschool, and our sanity.

I like starting my homeschooling day with Bible reading and a devotional.

My favorite devotionals that I have read to my kids are by Louie Giglio. I really enjoy reading them because of how well they are written. They are easy to understand, have very interesting facts, and pertain very well to life. We have also started Bible Studies from Not Consumed that we have enjoyed.

My children have a notebook that they write the date in and then they copy down a Bible verse and write something they are grateful for. At the beginning of the school week I also have them write a journal entry of what they did that weekend.

Now on to the hard stuff.

The curriculum.

At this time, I have used all kinds of curriculum and I have not found one that I would highly recommend. It really does depend on your own personal homeschool and what you want and how you want your kids to learn.

I wanted my kids to have a love for learning instead of just focusing on good grades. Three of my children have graduated. I am only half way done in my homeschooling journey. The things that my kids remember most about those homeschooling years are the books I read to them, the discussions we had, and the trips we took.

Like I said just keep it simple.

There is so much information out in the YouTube world of what everyone is using and doing in their homeschool that it can throw you down the depths of despair.

Why?

Because you might feel like you have to do all that you hear and see. I want to tell you that I have been there and that no you don’t have to do all that you hear and see. No one knows your kids like you do. Make your homeschool your own.

Focus on the basics. Focus on teaching your children life skills that they will use for the rest of their life.
