Are you new to homeschooling? Have you seen all the wonderful things that are out there? I have. Those things are nice but you don’t need them all.
I would have to say that “less is best”.
Now that is my opinion.

You can make your homeschool however you want to. Whatever you want to buy for your homeschool is up to you. I just found that you really don’t need much. I started my homeschool journey back in 2018. I was brand new to it and had no idea what I was doing and what I needed.
I watched a lot…and I mean…a lot of YouTube videos. YouTube was where most of my homeschool research came from.
One important question I asked myself was what did I actually need for my homeschool? From the YouTube videos that I watched I thought I needed a homeschool room filled with decor and supplies in order for my kids to get the best learning experience.
I tried that.
Now, if you have a homeschool room and if that works for you then that’s great. For me, I noticed that my children didn’t learn better because of a homeschool room. It didn’t really matter where we were homeschooling. What mattered more was how we were homeschooling. I wanted them to learn no matter where we were. I haven’t had a homeschool room for a few years now and what I can say is that it made me realize that I didn’t really need one in the first place.
On the other hand, school supplies are a definite must have in any homeschool. Once again, you don’t have to go all out and buy fancy and expensive things. I found a good amount of things that were inexpensive and a must have in my homeschool.

Inexpensive Finds For Your Homeschool
Find a devotional that you can do together. I am a mama that loves God and starting my homeschool day with a prayer and reading a devotional was very important to me. I found a devotional called Indescribable: 100 Devotions for Kids About God and Science by Louie Giglio. Let me tell you, this is one of the best devotionals that I have read in my life so far. Each devotional is very well written, informative, and uplifting. Both my kids and I have enjoyed reading it and learning about science as well as having a daily reminder of God’s goodness. I would highly recommend it. (here is a link if you are interested https://amzn.to/3Q5evCs)
Find a good library and get yourself a library card. It will save you so much money in the long run because you won’t have to buy all the books. Also, look into what your library offers. Mine offers a free local Zoo pass for the family one time per month.
Dry erase boards and markers. They are super fun for kids to use and will save you money on not having to buy so much paper. When I would do read alouds my girls would doodle on them as they were listening. Even my younger girls who were not in school yet loved drawing on dry erase boards. It would keep them occupied as I taught the older girls. (here is a link to the dry erase boards and markers if you are interested https://amzn.to/3vRHwLd and https://amzn.to/3JmS2gz)
Get yourself some clipboards. It’s that simple. There was a time in my homeschool journey that my older girls were doing their history from the History Channel on Youtube. I made some printouts for them to fill out as they watched the episodes. I highly recommend using Youtube for educational purposes when you need that extra help in teaching a subject. (here is a link to the clipboards if you are interested https://amzn.to/4aZ19Qa)
Ticonderoga pencils. They are more durable than other pencils I have tried and I have tried a whole variety of different pencils. I would also recommend pencil top erasers because no matter what pencils you buy the erasers disappear faster than the pencil.
Crayola colored pencils and markers have always been my go to. They last long and have a variety of colors. (here is a link to the markers if you are intereted https://amzn.to/446pT6T)
- Get yourself an organizer caddy to keep the pencils, markers, glue sticks, and scissors in one place. It’s practical and space saving. It doesn’t have to be a fancy or expensive one. The ones I have used have been from the Target Dollar Spot. My girls would take it all over the house with them. They still do to this day. They are able to find everything they need.
- Binders to keep your children’s work in. Either work they are working on or work for safekeeping if you need to turn it in at the end of the year.
- To keep things organized there was one time that I used square bins for each of my girls school books. All they had to do was pull out the things they needed and then put them back in the bin when they were done.
Don’t forget a tape dispenser. My girls have used it nonstop to this day.
