Reading is a huge part of homeschooling. In our home there is a lot of reading that goes on and mostly it’s by me.
I love to read!
I discovered this love of reading when I was starting middle school. The library was my favorite place to be.
It still is.
I can spend all day at a library or a book store. But, I just don’t have the time these days. I am a busy mother of 6 children. A lot of my reading is done during homeschooling.
I have tried to pass on the love of reading to my children. But, only some of them like to read. I wish that I would have found out sooner that instilling a love of reading starts while they are still a baby and should be a priority throughout the years. Even if it’s a couple of minutes a day when they are younger. Also, children need to see that we are reading because they will definitely try to copy us.
I have some favorite read a loud books that I have read over the years that my kids have enjoyed and still do.
5 Read A Loud Books:
The first book is Little Pilgrims Progress by Helen L Taylor. This is one of my favorite read a loud books that I have read. It is an adaptation of Paul Bunyan’s classic but this one is geared towards children. Being an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it touched me deeply. Recently, my daughter who is in 5th grade asked me to read it again.
The second book is actually part of a series. It’s The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. These books were such a fun read with the adventures that four sisters take. The girls are different ages and the adventures they go on are very relatable to real life. My older girls, two who are in college and one who will be graduating this year, still remember the books. Highly recommended.
The third book is The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. It is another favorite of ours that my older girls still remember. It is a story about a girl with a clubfoot living through the difficult times of WWll.
The fourth book is actually a collection of books. They are the Elephant and Piggie books. They are funny books that are great to read over and over again. Let’s just say that I have read these over and over and over…and so on.
